Controversies still exist over access to live sport on tv. More specifically, this relates to whether sports should be viewed as available to all in the public interest, or restricted by cost. The rise of satellite and cable television, and the associated division of rights into paid and free television, does create a majority split in terms of who gets to watch what kinds of coverage. Public interest arguments push for a maintenance of broadcasting rights on major international events and tournaments, and claim that they should be made available to the largest number of audiences. Opponents however argue that a deregulated media market that encourages competition for rights will see the best services win rights and be able to deliver the highest quality coverage. Given the availability of games online, and the potential for non subscribers to view games in pubs and other homes, the problem is perhaps overstated, but may lead to further consolidation of premium rights into the future.
