Established in 1985 by Steve Edmunds and Cornelia St. John (inventive name, huh?) with the intent of crafting Rhone varietals which at the time was a crazy thought in California. Even wine clubs at the time didn’t think such a thing was either possible, or a smart use of recources. How things have changed with a Rhone styled blend from California winning Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2011. Total production is currently about four thousand cases and still centers around the Rhone varietals of Viognier and of course the standout Syrah’s which have made the winery famous. Offering a more controlled style than many of their competitors, Edmunds St. John makes these wines out of a small custom crush and warehouse facility in Berkeley California which is in east bay next to Oakland. Fruit is sourced largely from Central Coast vineyards in and around San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.
